Understanding the difference between Osteopenia and Osteoporosis
Both osteopenia and osteoporosis represent a danger to function and
even life when in their advanced stages. The root strength of the
human frame is based upon a sound and strong skeleton.
In osteopenia there is literally a “lack of bone” or a reduction in the
normal density of bone tissue in the skeleton (BMD). Osteo is from
the Latin, meaning bone. Penia from the Greek means literally poverty
or a “lack of.”
Osteoporosis on the other hand literally means the bone has become
more “porous” or less dense.
The best test to determine if you have osteopenia or osteoporosis is
a special test called a DEXA-Scan or DXA. This simple test gives two
important results. The Z score, how you compare to others of your
same age and gender, and the T Score, how you stack up against
someone of your same gender at age 30.
If you are a woman in your mid 40′s or older, or a male over 50,
it may be a very good idea to have your doctor schedule a DEXA-
Scan for you to determine your current status. If you already have
the results of a scan, you should act today to begin to improve your
scores.
Bone loss is a natural consequence of aging, as is muscle loss over
time, especially in sedentary people. However, with the right high
intensity exercise, and a healthy diet, including Vitamin D and a
great supply of minerals, you can stop and even reverse muscle and
bone loss. You can become more like the T score standard…that is,
more like a 30 year old. Is this realistic? You bet…there are many
natural approaches to stopping osteopenia and/or osteoporosis in their
tracks…and even reversing the process.
Life is a structure-function relationship, and when it comes to bone
density, and overall bone and muscle strength, you do have an option
that makes the most sense.
“Four exercises, five seconds each, for a total workout time of 20
seconds…per week is all it takes to prevent and treat osteoporosis
naturally.”
